Creepy, Chalky, Charcoal artwork!
Our final Halloween art project was done with chalk pastels and charcoals. Almost all of the groups, except our older boys group…plus Maggie, worked with chalk pastels. The kids were given different templates-ghosts, cats and haunted houses. With masking tape on the back of the outline of these Halloween images we placed them on black construction paper. Using Chalk pastels in yellow, orange, purple and green, the kids were instructed to outline the edge of the image with small strokes that started on the template and then move out to the black construction paper. Once it was completely outlined, we smudged…one color at a time, the strokes from the template to the black area. When we gently peeled away the template, it revealed a very cool glowing effect around the silhouette of the image . From there, the students made some happy ghosts, accessorized ghosts, and evil ghosts. Other students filled in the black area on the inside of the ghosts with white chalk pastel and gently smudged and blended it in to create a translucent figure. Using a pencil with a new eraser to give a precise edge, they gave their ghosts their own personalities by erasing areas to make eyes and mouths. Chalk this project up to real talent!
